Obstetric Fistula

Obstetric fistula is a condition where there is an abnormal opening between a woman’s vagina and bladder and/or rectum. This results in continuous leakage of urine (vesico-vaginal fistula) and/or feces (recto-vaginal fistula). The primary cause of obstetric fistula is prolonged obstructed labor. When a woman’s pelvis is too narrow for the fetus to pass through, and emergency obstetric care is not accessible, the pressure from the fetal head can damage the soft tissues around the vagina, rectum, and bladder.

Women living with obstetric fistula in Nigeria face significant challenges:
-They are often ostracized and abandoned by their families and friends.
– Stigmatization and discrimination lead to feelings of depression, loneliness, and a loss of self-esteem and identity.
– The constant leakage of urine or feces affects their physical and mental well-being.
